REALITY STORE TEACHES AREA 8TH GRADE STUDENTS ABOUT LIFE EXPENSES

Clare-Gladwin Career and Technical Education (CTE) recently concluded its Reality Store program with a visit from Clare eighth-grade students at the Magnus Center, marking the final session of this year’s series. The program provides students with an interactive opportunity to explore real-world financial decision making and better understand the connection between education, careers, and everyday life. Eighth-grade students from Beaverton, Farwell, Gladwin and Harrison also participated earlier in the year.

During their visit, students were divided into three groups and rotated through activities connecting classroom learning to future planning. One group participated in the Reality Store, where students were assigned a career, salary, and financial responsibilities, then worked through stations such as housing, student loans, child care, transportation, groceries and entertainment to manage a monthly budget. Another group toured CTE programs at the Magnus Center, exploring hands-on learning environments. The third group participated in Mid Michigan College Bingo, sparking conversations about college and future opportunities.

Margie Dill, CTE counselor and Reality Store organizer, coordinates the program with school districts across Clare and Gladwin counties.

“The Reality Store is an eye-opening experience for these students,” said Dill. “Many found themselves without enough money for the basic necessities and had to revisit stations to select less expensive options. Students quickly learn that adulting is not easy, and I think they leave with a deeper appreciation for the daily financial decisions their parents have to make.”

By the end of the experience, students walk away with a clearer understanding of the choices and responsibilities that come with managing everyday life. Experiences like this are part of CTE’s ongoing commitment to preparing students for life beyond the classroom.
